A lot of us like to spend our free time in the woods camping, or even at a camp site. It’s fun, and is an escape from the daily grind, but before you head out on your next trip, are you sure you have all the camping essentials packed?
This short list is going to cover 6 items that most people forget when they are heading out camping!
This is quite a common one, and I have seen many people forget about this simple item. When taking about camping essentials, I mean essentials, not luxuries. Remember to pack a roll of toilet paper in your backpack before heading out camping, even out for a day hike, a roll of toilet paper is very useful. You can flatten it out, and put the roll in a ziplock bag, and suck the air out of it to make it as compact as possible.
You may be wondering why you would want to bring a picnic rug. Well, a rug is useful for many different things. I find a rug with a waterproof base is best, as it can be set on the ground at the front of your tent and used for removing shoes, or even put under your tarp so you don’t have to sit on the ground if it’s wet.
A tarp is a great essential camping item. Sitting in your tent waiting for the rain to stop is boring. Sitting under a tarp outside isn’t just as bad, you have more space to move around, and can cook under a tarp without the risk of poisonous gasses building up like in a tent. I usually carry a 3m x 3m tarp with me, it’s light weight, and doesn’t take up much space in my backpack.
Power Bank and Solar Charger
Some people like to go camping to get away from technology, but, I like to have some electronics with me, and so having a way to charge these is essential. I usually carry a power bank and USB solar charger to keep my devices powered. This is handy for charging up flashlights, and other small electronics.
Camping is great fun, but wondering around in the dark trying to find somewhere to go to the toilet is not. Invest in a quality headlamp, such as the OLight H2R Nova, and you will never be stuck without light again. A head lamp in my opinion is better than a hand held torch, as you can have both hands free whilst still having light.
Having a way to wash and dry your hands up is makes a world of difference in how clean everything stays, especially your clothes. Keep a cloth in your pocket, and wipe your hands as needed, and you won’t be tempted to wipe them on your shirt of trousers. When the towel gets dirty. give it a rinse and hang it to dry beside the camp fire.
Plastic bags are great for throwing rubbish in, wet clothes, a dirty cooking pot… the list is endless. Keep a few of them stuffed in your backpack to have them when needed.
Hopefully this list of camping essentials will help you out when you are planning you next camping trip. If you have any more essential camping items, leave a comment below and let me know what they are!
